Field observations indicate that each geologic unit (for example, flood-plain alluvium) has a definite composition or range of composition. Therefore, the presence of material type is interpreted from the distribution of geologic units (Newberry and others, 1996 - PDF96-16). Assignment of Unified Soil Classes (Wagner, 1957) is based on visual observation and interpretation of the likely distribution of the materials; no grain-size analyses were performed. Descriptions of unconsolidated deposits are modified from Pewe and Bel (1975a-d) and Pewe and Bell (1976). This map is generalized and is not intended to show exact locations of specific materials.\r\nThe purpose is to indicate areas where there is a high likelihood of finding the desired geologic materials. Local variations are common, especially near unit boundaries. Precise economic evaluation of specific localities as sources of desired geologic materials will require detailed examination of each deposit, including areal extent, volume, grain-size variation, thickness of overburden, thermal state of the ground, depth to ground water, access, demand, and land ownership.\r\n\r\nThe layers listed below are present as ArcGIS shape files. This compilation was done on a one to one scale, stable mylar of the USGS topographic base for each of the 1:63,360 scale USGS topographic bases included in the map area. Geologic data included in the compilation are the field maps and notes from this project as well as data from other sources as noted in the "Sources Cited" section.\r\n\r\nPolygon topology present and clean.\r\nThis dataset includes geospatial information about geologic materials units.\r\n\r\n\r\nLocation data were determined visually using topographic maps at scales of 1:63,360 and larger. Altimeters were also used. GPS technology was not used to determine locations. Instead, geologic contacts, sample, and station locations were visually hand-plotted onto stable mylar bases from the field maps. The coordinates of sample and station locations were determined with a digitizing tablet. All samples plotted on the maps are included in the various tables.\r\n\r\n100\r\nThe estimated horizontal error of this dataset is +/- 100 meters.
